I first heard of Survivor on the radio as I waited in my car to go into a Journalism class in college. They were talking about this new show where people would go live together and have to make their own shelter and get their own food while they competed for a million dollars. I thought, “Who would do that? It sounds awful.” I also doubted a TV show’s ability to bring together the best that humanity had to offer. It sounded like a televised version of Lord of the Flies.
I did not watch the first episodes, but after Kevin and I started dating I learned that a group of friends would get together weekly and watch it. Since Kevin was there I wanted to be there too. I had no idea what was going on, but the more I watched, the more I wanted to watch. It was hard not to be charmed by the late, great Rudy or wonder why everyone was under Richard’s spell.
After we were married Survivor became a staple in our home. We missed several seasons for some reason, but we came back around about 10 years ago and haven’t missed a season since.
I love Survivor. I know some fans are annoyed when they try to do something different or add an advantage that seems to mess with the gameplay too much, but I like that they are trying to change it up. I like that it’s the same, but not the same. I recently went back and watched the first season of Survivor. It was brutal! The gameplay was so slow and the story lines were more about them surviving in the wilderness than meeting the players. They have come a long way since that first season.
Right now they are in their 39th season and it has been rough. I don’t mind the theme this season. They brought back two legendary players to coach the current cast. They also give commentary at tribal council which is delightful. The cast this season has had several issues that has made the season difficult to watch. It has made the game heavy. On one hand I can appreciate that they are dealing with real life issues and allowing the castaways to speak openly about the issues, but one incident in particular has been really difficult to deal with and has left a horrible taste in my mouth. I have never been so ready for a season to be over with.
Next season, season 40, should be epic. They have announced that it will be an all winner season. It has never been done before. It will be so fun to see these amazing players together on one season.
Kevin and I have watched a lot of television in our days, but none has stuck around like Survivor. No matter what night it has aired, that was our favorite day of the week. There is nothing like Kevin made popcorn and Survivor.
It’s hilarious when we tell people that we watch Survivor. They usually say, “What? That show is still on?” It is still on and it will continue to be apart of my week until CBS decides to snuff out their torch.
